A 104-year-old school building in Anaconda may need to be condemned or demolished if one school official's recommendation is carried through by the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Commissioners.
Anaconda's Superintendent of Schools Tom Dalmer says he will suggest to the commissioners at the Tuesday work session that the building be roped off and considered for demolition.
The Daly Gym is currently used by the Anaconda Park and Recreation Department, but it actually belongs to the school district, placing liability issues on the district if the building were to give way to its century of wear and tear.
"The general public does not realize just how much in a state of repair that building is. And I'm trying to bring them up to speed as you need to come look. Floors are warped, ceilings are falling in internally, brick work on the exterior is separated in some areas to the extent you see all the way through the building from the inside out. And it needs to be addressed," Anaconda Superintendent of Schools Tom Dalmer said.
It would cost over $1 million to bring the building back to its original state, according to estimates.
The public meeting of county commissioners is Tuesday night.
