Have you received one of those annoying phone messages, telling you that the warranty on your car is about to expire ? If so, you're not alone. The federal government says it's now going after the people behind these so-called "robo" calls.

Montanans across the state are being swarmed by these phone calls regardless if you're on the Do Not Call List, or on a personal cell phone. Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock says he's joining in on the fight against the robo-calls.

The scam can happen to anyone, but the elderly are most prone, like Edna Deafy, 69, of Ashland. Deafy thought her warranty was about to expire when she got the call. A telemarketer told her he was from the dealership, got her account number and withdrew nearly $1,200 from her account.

"We went to the dealership and we did ask them and they told us that they had never made that call," said Colleen Wolf, Deafy's niece.

Attorney General Bullock has even gotten these phone calls himself. He says that in one case, "an 82-year-old woman, who didn't even have her drivers license," was a victim of the scam.     "We've so far recovered about $7,000 from five different companies and 12 subsideries that have bought the auto warranty extenders," said Bullock.

Bullock recommends that Montanans get on a federal and state do not call list and contact the office of consumer protection if you feel you've been a victim of this crime.

On a positive note, Deafy was able to get all of her money back after threatening to investigate the company.
