As students pack their bags and head for the classroom there may be some who don't take in what the teachers teach as quickly as others.
But there are options available for those struggling to learn at school, as author Ron Davis points out in his book "The Gift of Dyslexia."
Davis is touring the U.S. and Canada to lecture on his book. One of his stops is at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman.
"For parents that have a child struggling in school, first of all, the parent's didn't cause it, and that's nothing is really wrong with the child. It is the system that the child that isn't designed for the way he wants to work," Davis said.
Davis, who also has the disorder, feels that by following the procedures explained in his book those with dyslexic can successfully overcome it. The book focuses on taking a new approach to not only dyslexia but also other learning disabilities as well.
Director of education for Bozeman schools, Chad Berg, says that in order to help a child with a disability,
It takes a group effort to help a child with a disability, according to Chad Berg, Director of Education for Bozeman schools.
"We really try to focus on collaboration between families, classroom teachers, we have reading interventionists and special education staff, and all of these folks working together. We try to build in the extra support, find extra time in a child's day to try and close any gaps that may be there," Berg said.
With the help of books like the "The Gift of Dyslexia" and the dedication from all levels of education, those gaps can continue to shrink in the years to come.
