Montana AG approves language for abortion restriction initiative

Posted:

Updated:

Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock has approved language for a proposed ballot measure aimed at restricting abortions.

Constitutional Initiative 102 defines a "person" as being at the beginning of a human being's biological development. A similar proposal fell short of getting the required number of signatures to make the ballot last year.

The rules state that it takes 40,000 petition signatures to qualify a constitutional initiative for the ballot.

Opponents contend the proposal infringes on a woman's right to privacy, and claim the measure's language is misleading. But backers say efforts are also under way to get the measure on the ballot in several other states.
