Icy roads and drivers traveling too fast for conditions were to blame for numerous traffic accidents in the Butte area Monday morning.
Montana Highway Patrol troopers responded to three slide-off accidents on Interstate 90 with most of the accidents occurring near the Fairmont Hot Springs Exit and one reported on Interstate 15 near Dillon.
One adult male was taken to St. James Healthcare in Butte with injuries when the vehicle he was driving hit black ice and rolled, landing in the ditch.
Five more accidents were reported Monday morning with no injuries reported. In Butte, there were three accidents with no injuries.
Southwest Montana got an abrupt winter welcome over the weekend with some areas seeing up to a foot of snow.
A foot of snow had fallen in Red Lodge as of Monday evening. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for south-central Montana.
In spite of the warning, major highways fared pretty well for travelers Monday morning, but secondary roads had more trouble spots. Travelers on Homestake Pass encountered some slippery spots and a bit of ice, but travel was not difficult and no major accidents were reported as of Monday evening.
Interstate 15 south of Divide received some snow cover with slippery spots around Dillon and on highways around Ennis.
Meanwhile, high winds on Sunday and overnight snow led to some power outages in rural areas, in Livingston, in the Four Corners area and in downtown Bozeman. Some customers were without power for about two hours. There were also power outages reported in Billings, Absarokee and Big Timber.
A mountain near Red Lodge had recorded over two feet of snow by Monday morning and a National Weather Service spotter has reported 10 inches of snow at Nye.
