Montana's general hunting season opened on Sunday with 100,000 hunters expected to spread across public and private lands stalking elk, deer, and new this year, wolves.
Montana, Fish, Wildlife officials report that the Darby, Bonner and Anaconda check stations say 2,715 hunters that checked 100 elk, 17 mule deer, 44 white-tailed deer, three black bears and two wolves, for 6.1% of hunters with game on opening day.
We stopped by a Bonner check point where some University of Montana students can earn credit by helping out.
"It's a tremendous help for us just because of the volume of traffic we see through Bonner" said Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Wildlife Biologist Jay Kolbe." We'll get close to 11,000 hunters through Bonner during the course of the general season, and without their help we couldn't do the work we do."
Workers at the Bonner check point record information from all hunters, even the ones who aren't so lucky. FWP officials will get a ratio of successful to unsuccessful hunters, record the age of the animals killed, and where they were taken.
Bear season is also currently underway and we spoke to one teenager who got his first black bear.
"It was pretty big, bigger than anything other bear my Dad has shot" said 14-year-old Justin Wallace.
The Bonner check point will be open for the rest of the season on the weekends.
