The state Judicial Nomination Committee has released the names of those vying for Justice John Warner's seat on the state Supreme Court, which will become vacant when he retires at the end of the year.
There are 11 lawyers seeking the position, including: Roy Andes who has a private practice in Helena and Carlo Canty who served as an assistant Attorney General for the state until last year.
Karen Powell, the current Chairwoman for the State Tax Appeal Board is also seeking the job, as is Helena Lawyer Ron Waterman, who ran against Mike McGrath for Supreme Court Chief Justice in the last election.
Other applicants come to the board from Butte, Missoula, Arlee, Kalispell, Clinton, Dillon and Bozeman.
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer will have the final say on the appointment to the position after the Judicial Nomination Committee selects three to five candidates to recommend to the Governor.
The selected lawyer is expected to take office in January 2010 and will need to run for election in November in order to serve the rest of Justice's Warner's term, which expires in 2014.
