Wolf hunting will end after sunset on Monday across most of southern Montana after the region's quota for the predators was exceeded on the first day of the general hunting season.

Public wolf hunts this fall in Montana and Idaho are the first since the animals were removed from the endangered species list earlier this year.

Montana has a statewide quota of 75 wolves, including 12 for south-central and southeast Montana.

Nine of those 12 were taken in an early season hunt adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. Four more were taken in that hunting zone within hours of the general season opening on Sunday, prompting the closure.
