A fire that destroyed part of a Great Falls house earlier this year led to some much needed renovations - which turned up more than just dirt.
Cindy Torrez's son discovered five five burial headstones in his neighbor's backyard when he was taking out the trash on Thursday. Then another neighbor came forward, saying she found two more in her backyard.
Willard Cook is in charge of the cemetery records for the Great Falls Genealogy Society, and says that the stones look authentic, but are not typical of the era etched on them. He remarked that they look, "...professional. But normally people used monuments back then."
The Genealogy society says there is no indication a cemetery ever existed here, which opens the door to a whole new set of questions: where did these head stones come from, and what could still be lying underneath?
Cook noted, "You would think they would have found something additional."
Some stones have more detail than others; one stone reads simply "father." Another appears to be the stone for a toddler, with the dates "1900 - 1904" inscribed.
Cook says the stones themselves create more questions than they solve at this point, but added that his organization is on the case.
Residents like Cindy just hope to solve the mystery in order to get the stones back to their rightful owners.
The Genealogy Society will start the investigation by searching through its burial records, which include over 40,000 names. Cook says if possible matches come up, the society will determine what the next step should be.
The homeowner whose property most of the stones were found on says the man who used to own her house may have worked with concrete, and may have been working on selling the stones.
