The Missoula Police Department is still looking for the vandals who flooded the Missoula Housing Authority apartments back in September, as construction crews began repairing the damages earlier this week.
The apartment units in the Garden District Apartments were hit by vandalism and flooded. “The pea traps under the sinks had been removed and the water turned on, and there was 100,000 thousand gallons of water that flooded both of the buildings” explained MHA Executive Director Lori Davidson.
She says officers driving in the area noticed lights flashing in the units, went over to investigate, and found water running out from underneath the doors of the two buildings.
"So we immediately called the restoration company, had them come out and start drying it out. It took over two week to dry it out” Davidson told us.
The extensive damage to 10 of the units forced crews to remove flooring, ceilings, kitchen cabinets and much more according to Davidson.
“We've had to remove the insulation between the first and second floors, remove the sheet rock, take out all the cabinets. The restoration work is costing a little bit less than we first thought because the cabinets luckily were not seriously damaged."
The total cost of the repairs is just over $150,000 and Davidson is asking anyone who might have information about the vandalisms to call Missoula police.
“The most damage has been done to the families who could have moved in here, that would have been families living in these units now, if this damage hadn't occurred” Davidson commented.
She says it will take about a month to get the buildings to look like they did before the vandalism and that the Missoula Housing Authority will start screening tenants this week to see if they qualify to move into the new units.
