Polson considering recycling program

The City of Polson is discussing the possibility of starting up a new recycling program so as the city keeps growing.

Polson Parks Director Karen Sargeant says they have applied for a Montana Department of Environmental Quality grant to create a recycling program.

All recyclable have to go out to Lake County transfer station and Sargeant says that’s too far for a lot of people to go, so a lot of it just goes into the landfill. The program would put recycling bins in city offices, departments and Polson parks.

Sargeant says now would be a good time to start the program if they get the grant.

“As we grow and expand, the program will be able to grow and expand with us, so it's not like we wait until we grow and expand and then play catch up, so that's my ultimate goal so far, is to get the entire city on a curbside recycling program, but there's a lot of players that are going to have to be brought into the game before we do that."

There was a central recycling location run by a private organization that shut down earlier this year. But, Sargeant says the bins were always full and area residents still want to recycle.
