A court date has not yet been scheduled in a federal lawsuit filed by a Lake County woman who says she was denied critical medicine while being held in the county jail.
Bethany Cajúne was in the Lake County Detention Facility in March, serving the remainder of an outstanding short term sentence for traffic violations.
In the suit filed on her behalf, the American Civil Liberties Union of Montana says Cajúne was four to five months pregnant at the time and was about to complete a year-long treatment program for being addicted to opiod drugs.
But, Cajúne claims corrections officers denied her access to Suboxone, which is used to treat withdrawal.
Attorneys say she suffered 'complete and abrupt withdrawal' and symptoms that were 'extremely dangerous' in her pregnant state.
The ACLU says the county continued to deny her medication, even when her doctor and drug counselor appealed for jailers to make sure she received treatment. A public defender was finally able to intervene and get Cajúne her medication, but that took nine days.
Cajúne says she was afraid her baby might die and that she's brought the case to make sure no other woman goes through the same experience.
The ACLU says Lake County violated established standards of care for pregnant women who being treated for opioid addiction. The county hasn't responded to the case, which was just filed late last week.
