Whitetail deer and mule harvest still lags well below last year's numbers in northwest Montana.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reports that over 18,000 hunters have taken 852 whitetails, 152 mule deer and 132 elk so far this hunting season.

The numbers show that 6.2% of hunters managed to take game compared to last years 7.2%. While Whitetail bucks and mule deer harvested are nearly the lowest on record, the elk harvest is above average.

Wardens say hunters need to remember whitetail deer hunting is buck only in most of Region 1 hunting district. Meanwhile the 2009 big game hunting season ends on Sunday, November 29th, 30 minutes after sunset.
