Only one team can end the season undefeated and they always come home with a big reward.
The Drummond Trojans celebrated another state football title on Saturday and on Monday, they brought the proof of their work home to the trophy case.
In a hallway just after lunch, a small school celebrated another big win as the Drummond football team presented a first place trophy to the district, while many young Trojan fans cheered them on.
"It feels really good, you know. We won one when I was a sophomore, but I wasn't really a part of it. Just on the sidelines. It feels a little more special this time" Jordan Mannix said.
The Trojans made nearly an eight hour trip to Wibaux to play in the Class C 8-man state championship game. And they enjoyed every minute of the trip home.
Quarterback Neil Mannix scrambled to run the last seconds off the clock to preserve a 32 to 24 win, but he says the thrill of the title took a while to sink in.
"There was a little delayed reaction for me" Mannix told us. "It took a while for me to get from where I just got downed to where we won the state championship. It was like, ok, what just happened? Oh! Sweet!"
Head Coach Jim Oberweiser is getting used to a sweet ending to every football season. Even though the kids change every year, the results usually stay the same.
The Trojans won their first state title in 2003, and now they own five of the past seven. Drummond struggled through an uncharacteristic 4-4 season in 2008, but this group of Trojans made it their mission to make everyone forget about last year.
"We had senior leadership again this year. And you know, I think not making it made us realize how much we really wanted to make it, and how much we wanted to go all the way" Bryan Mannix explained.
