For many, the search for the perfect Christmas tree begins this weekend.
But if you're on Forest Service land, make sure you have a permit before making your cut.
Permits are just $5.00 and are available at the Lewis & Clark Forest Service Office on 15th Street, or at Scheels in Holiday Village Mall.
Permits also are available at Forest Service offices in Augusta, Choteau, Neihart, White Sulphur Springs, Stanford and Harlowton. Trees obtained with this permit are for personal use and may not be re-sold.
Virtually the entire Lewis & Clark National Forest can be searched, but trees need to be cut at least 100 feet off the road, and not next to well-traveled roads, summer homes, or campgrounds.
Officials caution that you should wear safety glasses and don't cut trees taller than 12 feet.
For more information call the Forest Service office at 791-7700.
