Police in Great Falls are looking for the owner of a black lab that was rescued from the ice on Sunday morning.

Police and firefighters found the dog stranded on the Missouri River just below the Ninth Street Bridge at about 6:45 a.m.

The dog had a leg wound and appeared to be confused and since rescuers were unable to move the dog they contacted local veterinarian Dr. Rick Scherr of the Big Sky Animal Clinic for help.

Scherr arrived on the scene with a tranquilizer gun and quickly subdued the dog. Firefighters then crawled out on the ice and moved the dog to safety.

The dog was wearing an orange collar and a leash, but police say the black lab didn't have any tags. Anyone with information about the dog's owner is asked to contact the Great Falls Police Department.
