Montana Senator Max Baucus is among the leading Democrats who say they're ready to overhaul the country's health care system.
Baucus started his call to action Wednesday, saying three basics should happen.
"First, get everyone in America covered with decent health insurance. That's everyone. Reduce health care costs so that everyone can afford the care they need even if their insurance is pretty basic. And finally, make America healthier with better quality care and more preventive care," Baucus said.
Baucus' plan is similar to the one pushed by President-elect Barack Obama, though it goes further, requiring everyone to buy insurance once affordable options are available. Help would be provided to people who fit into the low income category and tax credits would be available for small businesses.
Baucus also wants to see an insurance exchange where people can compare plans and buy with one simple form. Those who are happy with their current coverage can keep it.
The Democrat did not say how much his proposal will cost, but he argued that in the long run the cost of doing nothing will end up being much higher and that the system can work better and cost less for everyone.
Meanwhile, some question whether it's realistic when economic conditions are so dreary.
