Some "shining stars" in Billings School District Two were chosen to receive Golden Apple awards for their hard work and commitment to teaching.
It was a special day for one teacher a Castle Rock Middle School as the entire study body filled the gym to show their support for their school Music Director Justin Engle.
"Mr. Engle has 132 students who volunteer to come into his jazz rock band and the crowd...they are packed into his band room every week, and it's volunteer time. They come in at seven in the morning" said Principal Shaun Harrington.
Engle's dedication, combined with his ability to inspire and motivate students through music, made him a perfect candidate for this prestigious award according to Harrington.
"He's one of those teachers that exemplifies everything that's best about education. He's phenomenal with the kids."
Engle said he was shocked to learn that he was a Golden Apple Award winner, "until they started reading it..this teacher has 121 students and then it was like...whoa".
But the biggest surprise was an unexpected visit from his mom who flew in from Florida to take part in the event.
Castle Rock Elementary School's faculty told us they're honored to share this achievement with their beloved music director.
The other Golden Apple Award winners were Meadowlark Elementary School's Cindy Welch, Orchard Elementary School's Tawna Robinson, Billings Senior High School's Larry McMullen, Boulder Elementary School's Elaine Bankston and Lynn Noland of Meadowlark Elementary School.
