While many enjoy the sights and sounds of the Fourth of July, there are some who don't like the big loud celebrations: many pets become extremely frightened and experts say it's crucial to keep them sheltered.
While people see colorful explosions and hear the "blasts" of freedom, it's all too common for dogs, cats, and other pets to become agitated and frightened by the bangs, pops, and whistles.
Dr. Mike Petersen of Two Rivers Pet Hospital explained, "We do recommend that the pets be left indoors. If your pet has to be outside during fireworks they (should) be tethered, and they shouldn't be allowed to run free because there is a potential for the loud noises to scare them and for them to run off."
Here are a few more tips to keep your furry friend safe this Independence Day:
- During the big fireworks show, distract them with food or toys and turn on the television or play music for some background noise.
- Never light fireworks near pets or point the explosives near them.
- Make sure your pet has a collar or tag so you can better locate them if they do run off.
