MISSOULA - Rebecca J. Korn of Missoula was arrested Wednesday after authorities said they discovered 12 decomposed cats in her abandoned trailer home.
The animals were so severely decomposed, all that was left were skeletons.
Officials said they received a call from the homeowner's sister who was concerned about the cats, but when police arrived it was too late.
Police arrested Korn, 57-years-old, on felony animal cruelty charges after she allegedly knowingly abandoning her cats in her sealed trailer home.
They said the cats were left without food, water, or ventilation for an unknown period of time.
Missoula Police Department detective Sergeant Travis Welsh said officers could smell the stench of the trailer home before entering.
Welsh said, "The source of the stench, which is, you can imagine, in an extended period of time, those cats had no ventilation and no way to get out, apparently so they were trying to survive in their own waste as it were and trying to find enough water and food to get through every day."
Korn appeared in Justice Court in Missoula on Thursday afternoon and was released under special conditions such as restriction from all contact with animals.
