MISSOULA - We knew that craft brewing has become all the rage in Montana, and now there are numbers to back it up.

A study conducted by the University of Montana shows that craft brewing has become big business in Montana.

The survey shows that the industry represents more than 430 jobs, with nearly $50 million in private-sector sales.

The report, which was commissioned by the Montana Brewers Association, says that craft brewing production and sales were each up about 20% last year with employment increasing by 39%.

There were 33 breweries operating in the state at the end of 2011, and 19 of them are right here in western Montana.

"These numbers show the tremendous potential for Montana's breweries to continue to create jobs and wealth in Montana," said Tony Herbert, executive director of the Montana Brewers Association.

"The economic impact of the brewing industry in Montana is large and growing, and the potential for breweries to generate more jobs, more statewide tax revenues and more happy customers should not be underestimated," he stated in a news release.
