BUTTE - A black bear was killed by a vehicle Friday on the interstate near Butte, and wildlife officials suspect it may be the same bear that was spotted up a tree in town last week.
Sgt. Coy Kline of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said Monday he's certain the black bear that was found dead on the I-15 interchange going toward Helena was likely the same bear that was roaming a southeast neighborhood in Butte.
Kline said the adult bear was struck by a vehicle and killed on the interstate Friday night.
A bear was found up a tree near Burlington and Springfield in a residential neighborhood late Tuesday night. Wildlife officials didn't harass the animal, and it eventually left the area on its own the next morning.
FWP continued to receive reports of the bear wandering in the area and even set up a trap to try and capture it, but weren't able to catch it.
