GREAT FALLS - A body recovered Friday morning from Lake Elwell is believed to be that of Dr. John Kumm.
The body surfaced this morning at 9:10 a.m. near the west dock in about 15 feet of water, according to Liberty County Undersheriff Doug Riggin.
The body has been sent to Missoula for an autopsy for positive identification and to determine the cause and manner of death.
On Thursday, June 6, Kumm was reportedly at the lake on his boat and spoke with his brother on the phone at 6:46 a.m. At around 7:10 a.m., a woman at the marina looked out on the lake and saw Kumm's boat, but no one was on board.
Authorities believe Kumm either fell overboard or that his boat came unhooked from the dock and he may have tried to swim after it.
Kumm's family is asking for privacy at this time and tell us they will release a statement when they're ready.
We will update you as we learn more.
