HELENA - Governor Steve Bullock has approved the transfer of Yellowstone National Park bison to a quarantine facility.

Park officials had previously requested that 63 bison be transferred to a facility near Corwin Springs. The US Department of Agriculture reports the bison will be part of a hormone contraception study.

However, Yellowstone spokesperson Dan Hottle says the bison have moved back into the park, so they haven't began capture operations yet.

Right now the park is working to reduce the Yellowstone bison herd by 400 animals. Hottle says they are about half way there.

Hottle says the park would like to transport some bison to slaughter but former Governor Brian Schweitzer issued an executive order prohibiting the movement of bison.

In order for any other bison to be moved, Bullock would need to approve the transfer.
