A 6-year-old girl drowned in a boating accident near Corvallis on Sunday.
Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman says the incident happened about two miles downstream of the Woodside Fishing Access on the Bitterroot River.
A group of people, including the girl, were on a boat when it was caught in a hydraulic step below a diversion dam.
The victim and others in the group ended up in the water and several, including the victim, were caught in the strong currents behind the dam.
The child could not be resuscitated and was flown to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, where she was pronounced dead.
The Ravalli County Sheriff's Office and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks are investigating the incident.
The child's name is not being released at this time.
