The state of Washington has announced it will be analyzing the environmental impacts of coal trains on Montana.
According to the Washington Department of Ecology it will be preparing an environmental impact statement in order to determine whether or not the state should permit a new coal export terminal on the coast.
The state says because of the broad interest in coal exports they have decided to expand the scope of their environmental review to neighboring states.
The movement and export of coal has been highly controversial.
Coal supporters say it creates jobs while environmental groups argue coal is dirty and shouldn't be transported across the northwest.
The state of Washington reports it could take up to two years to draft the environmental impact statement.
