HELENA - Montana Attorney General Tim Fox is refusing to turn over the personal information of all the conceal carry permit holders in Montana.
According to emails sent to the AG's office, the Associated Press has requested the names, addresses, dates of birth and driver's license numbers of every conceal carry permit holder in Montana. Fox's office denied the request, saying the privacy of the permit holders exceeds the public's right to know.
"It is the opinion of this office that broad dissemination of Concealed Weapons Permit- status and application information would unnecessarily invade the privacy of individuals," the Montana Department of Justice states in the July 17 decision.
The AP requested the information just days after the Montana Legislature passed a bill requiring all information on a conceal carry application to be kept confidential.
Governor Steve Bullock signed the bill into law just 10 days after AP's request was sent.
A second news organization, MuckRock, also requested similar information after the bill became law.
The new confidentiality rules do not go into effect until Oct. 1 of this year.
