Marion residents and family members have spent the last two weeks searching the town hoping to find 18-year-old Levi Schneider, but their worst fears were confirmed Wednesday evening after family members found the teen dead.
Family members found Schneider, who'd been missing since July 7, in the woods near his grandparents' home.
Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry said, "We did have a conclusion to our missing persons case, and unfortunately it was a sad one. The body of Mr. Schneider was discovered yesterday evening by family members, we responded deputies to the scene...we processed that scene, he was deceased."
Curry says it appears that Schneider had been deceased for some time, and died as a result of a possibly self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Our victim did die of what appears to be a single gunshot wound to the head. Again at this point there's really no indication that there was any outside involvement or foul play. However we're still following up any leads we have on that," Curry explained.
The Sheriff's Office re-focused efforts this week to find Schneider, but he was finally discovered by family on Wednesday.
Curry says while the closure is good, he knows that this is extremely difficult for the family.
"I think in this case, we put quite a bit of man hours into it, I know the family put a lot of time and effort into locating him and these are sad, when they end this way. But at least it brings it to a conclusion for the family."
An official cause of death will not be released until the State Medical Examiner's Office in Missoula finishes an autopsy.
