MISSOULA - A Missoula County narcotics officer shot a suspect outside a casino Friday afternoon during a drug investigation.
Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Paige Pavalone says the incident happened at Toole and Burton streets, near the Magic Diamond casino in Missoula, at about 4 p.m.
Pavalone says that when the deputy approached the suspect, the man didn't obey commands and seemed to reach for something, and then tried to drive away in his truck.
The deputy then fired once, hitting the man, who is said to have been taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, in the leg.
"The deputy made contact with the suspect. The suspect was non-compliant. He was seated in his vehicle. The deputy was giving him order. The suspect put his hands down to look as though he was reaching for a weapon. At that point he tried to drive away from the deputy and away from the scene," Pavalone said.
Ravalli County authorities are in charge of the investigation and sent in a team late on Friday. This is the first officer involved shooting involving the Missoula County Sheriff's Office in two years.
