The growing trend of "dollar stores" is starting to make itself felt in the Treasure State, with a North Carolina company planning to open new stores in Montana.
The Charlotte Business Journal is reporting that Family Dollar Stores, Inc is moving forward with plans to expand its presence in the Northwest, including Montana, which would give it locations in all of the Lower 48 states.
Family Dollar opened its first store in Hardin, and has plans to open a new store in Dillon in November. Company officials tell the Business Journal they already have plans to open an additional 15 stores in the region in 2014. Most of those are expected to be in rural areas.
Family Dollar is already a retail player in 46 states with nearly 8,000 stores in operation. The stores are smaller, about 8,300 square feet and designed to serve the growing retail trend to people shopping for deeper discounts than can be had at most of the "big box" discount stores.
