East Helena man dies in New Year's Eve car accident

A 47-year old East Helena man died in a car accident on New Year's Eve.

According to Helena Police Chief Troy McGee, at around 8 pm the man was was driving a small pickup truck heading west on Prospect.

He started to enter the northbound on ramp to the interstate and hit the curb.

The truck then became airborne and landed in a grassy area and hit a light pole.

Helena police and fire crews and St. Peter's ambulance all responded to the scene.

The driver was transported to the hospital and declared dead.

The cause of the accident is being investigated; it is not yet known whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Lewis & Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson has identified the man as Darwin Lee Simac.
