MISSOULA - Montana wildlife officials say they have put down an elk that followed a motorcyclist earlier this month in the Blackfoot Valley.
The elk had become something of an online star, thanks to video shot by Heather Leigh of Missoula that showed the animal following Leigh and her boyfriend along Montana Highway 200 near Ovando on October 3rd.
Vivica Crowser with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks confirmed to MTN News on Tuesday morning that the elk had been euthanized, saying that the elk was habituated to people.
The animal was killed on October 9th near Ovando, with Crowser adding that FWP had received several reports that the elk was too comfortable around humans, and so as a safety precaution they euthanized the elk.
Heather said that they stopped behind a truck and saw the bull elk approach the vehicle. She believes the person in the truck had some food because the elk jumped up on his hind legs and peered in to the driver's window.
Heather said that the elk then jumped down and started to approach her and her boyfriend, and then began following them as they sped away on a motorcycle.
