BUTTE - Officials with the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department warn of grassfire dangers. There may be snow on the ground, but the grass underneath is dry this time of year.
Authorities say most grassfires are human caused. If you plan on burning, it's best to burn in the early morning. Make sure there is defensible space around your burn area. Make sure you have plenty of hand tools and a supply of water. Firefighters recommend you never burn alone.
"Especially on windy days you know during these dry conditions that we have right now, grass fires can get out of control in a big hurry," said Captain Shane Worley, with the Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department.
You can apply for an online permit at www.burnpermits.mt.gov. Permits are $10.
