KALISPELL - One hunter got more than he bargained for when he encountered a grizzly bear and two cubs on the first day of Spring turkey hunting season.
Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks officials say the man was hunting somewhere near the Creston National Fish Hatchery, east of Kalispell, when he saw the bear.
The hunter spotted a deer carcass, heard a noise, and looked up to see the bear charging him. He fired his shotgun at the grizzly, which then took off with the two cubs toward the east.
FWP officials didn't find any traces of blood from the bear, and took to the air to observe the area from a helicopter. They didn't find any sign of the bears, but set up cameras in the area in case they come back.
FWP wants to remind folks to contact them if you find any sign of the bears while out and about in the backcountry.
