Franz Bakery will be the bread supplier for the Butte School District since it recently ended a contract with Hostess Brands.

Last month, Butte students were served hamburgers without buns for hot lunch. The school district had to scramble to find a back-up supplier, according to Mark Harrison, director of central services for the Butte School District.
Franz Bakery will deliver product until the end of this school year, according to Harrison.

Franz Bakery cost the school district $3,100 more than Hostess would have to supply the school with bread products for the rest of the year. To enter into a full agreement with Franz Bakery will cost the school district nearly $6,000 more than Hostess.

"We went with Franz because they could make the deliveries on a daily basis, or when we needed it." Harrison said. "The product was fresh and they met all the criteria nutritional wise. We will look at in the future different options, but at this time, Franz meets all of our needs."

Harrison said Franz Bakery offered the lowest cost available to the school district. Before entering a full agreement, the school district will evaluate other options this summer.
