HELENA - A Gallatin County horse has tested positive for Equine Herpes Virus, the second recent case in Montana.
The case, involving a 6-year-old mare in Gallatin County, is not related to a case in Flathead County that was reported last week, according to the Montana Department of Livestock.
The infected horse arrived in Montana three weeks ago from southern California, a news release states.
The horse is being housed in a Gallatin County training facility that is now under quarantine. None of the other horses at the facility have shown any clinical signs of the virus, the release states.
According to the Montana Department of Livestock, the virus EHV-1 is naturally occurring in equine populations and may cause respiratory disease, abortion in mares, neonatal foal death and/or neurologic disease.
