BELGRADE - Gallatin County is 93,000 people spread out over 2,600 square miles. Law enforcement for much of that handled by the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department based in the middle of Bozeman. But now, the sheriff's department has new access to parts of the county, thanks to a partnership with a Belgrade neighborhood.
"We're in the River Rock substation outside of Belgrade and this is our brand new office this beautiful office right across from the school right next to the River Rock Pond and we couldn't be more thrilled," Sheriff Brian Gootkin said.
The sheriff's department is based at the Law and Justice Center. It's a great location for courts but a long drive for the rest of the county.
The River Rock neighborhood, along with Landmark to the north, is the third largest community in the county. That's why this office is so important.
"This is a true community partnership with the River Rock homeowners association where they've offered this space to us for free and now we're literally in their community. It's so much nicer, because now we can consider this our west substation. We'll go from here to Manhattan, Three Forks, Churchill. It gets us out of that Bozeman area," Gootkin said.
The substation also allows for face time, a chance to sheriff department deputies and officers to simply sit and talk with anyone who drops by. The "open" and "closed" sign for the substation will sit in its parking lot.
"If there's no car, no one's in here. If the car is there, please feel free to stop in just to say hi, that's what we want to do," Gootkin said.
The office will also save deputies time in filing reports. The substation offers a quiet place to work without having to go all the way back in to Bozeman.
A grand opening celebration is being planned for early summer.
