GREAT FALLS - A Great Falls teen is accused of assaulting his infant son after the child was taken to the hospital with numerous injuries.
Isac Stafford, 16, is charged with one count of felony aggravated assault after he and the boy's mother took their 6-week-old son to Benefis Hospital on June 5. They said that they were worried about the baby's swollen leg.
Hospital staff conducted an examination and found a fracture of the baby's left femur, which they told the parents could not have happened without some sort of "outside action."
The parents told hospital staff that the injury was caused then Stafford tripped and fell on the baby a week earlier.
Further examination by hospital staff indicated that the infant had sustained eight broken or fractured ribs and a broken right clavicle, as well as retinal hemorrhaging in both eyes, bruising between his eyebrows, abrasions on the bridge of his nose, an abrasion on his upper lip and both nostrils, and the upper frenulum was torn. Staff also reported abrasions and bruises on the baby's chin, the inside of his left humerus and on his chest.
Stafford was taken to the Great Falls Police Department, and when questioned, he admitted that he had been frustrated with the baby because the baby would not stop crying. Stafford then demonstrated how he had been holding the baby and admitted to squeezing the baby "really hard" for about 30 seconds.
Stafford faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
