Grizzly bear population discussed at Helena meeting

HELENA - Grizzly bear numbers and sightings are on the rise in Montana, and the animal could be removed from the federal list of endangered species.

During the Montana Wildlife Federation's annual meeting over the weekend, members discussed the changes in the grizzly's population.

They were listed on the Endangered Species Act in 1975, but officials now estimate that more than 1,000 grizzly bears live in the lower 48 states.

[We are] trying to get people with different points of view. [We are] bringing information together so that the public at large has an understanding of bears and bear management and can accept recovery and work out solutions as far as working with a species such as a grizzly," Skip Kowalski with the Montana Wildlife Federation said.

This weekend marks the Montana Wildlife Federation's 78th annual meeting.
