Officials at Malmstrom Air Force Base are responding today to a reported security lapse.
An Associated Press investigation released yesterday states this incident could have let a terrorist or other intruder enter an underground command post for nuclear missiles.
The AP reported that twice this year, crew members left a door, called a blast door, open when a crew member was asleep.
That could have compromised secret launch codes or allowed other damage.
In a statement Wednesday, 341st Missile Wing Commander Colonel Robert Stanley said a crew member deviated from protocols when he failed to wake his partner before allowing maintenance personnel into the control center. Stanley said deviation from standard procedures is not tolerated by the Air Force and the crew member involved was reported to commanders and is being punished.
