LAKE CHARLES, LA - A Louisiana man has pleaded guilty to killing a soldier from Whitefish nearly three years ago.
Byron Whitcomb, who was 21, died after being hit with a hammer and stabbed several times while serving at Fort Polk Army Base.
Marcus Patterson Carey, 28, of Fort Polk, La., pleaded guilty in federal court to second degree murder of one soldier and attempted murder of another soldier, United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley said.
Court papers say Carey admitted that on June 19, 2010 he killed Whitcomb at Fort Polk by striking him with a hammer and stabbing him several times.
Carey also admitted to attempting to kill a second person by striking that person with a hammer and stabbing that person multiple times, according to the documents.
Whitcomb was a multiple sport star at Whitefish High School, and left behind a wife and toddler.
During a June 2010 interview, Whitcomb's family said that Carey had served with Byron and was discharged from the Army and Byron had been trying to help him.
