BUTTE - A Butte man suffered serious burns in a house explosion this afternoon.
The explosion happened just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at 2218 Argyle Street.
The homeowner was sealing his basement cement floor with flammable materials, according to Butte-Silver Bow firefighters. Fire Investigator John Lasky believes a spark from the water heater may have caused the explosion.
The basement is a total loss. Walls on the main floor are leaning and bent.
Firefighters did not need to use any water at the scene. The fire blew itself out.
This afternoon firefighters were still trying to blow out the harmful chemicals that are still in the basement. They can't enter until the air is safe.
The man injured in the explosion was transported to St. James Healthcare. He suffered serious burns on the upper half of his body.
His wife was in the house at the time of the explosion. She was uninjured.
Their two cats survived the explosion.
