LAKE CHARLES, LA - A man who brutally killed a soldier from Whitefish more than three years ago has finally been sentenced in connection with the death.
Byron Whitcomb, 21, was killed by a man he befriended at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Whitcomb took in Marcus Carey, who was a homeless veteran - and in 2010, Carey attacked Whitcomb and another man with a hammer and a knife. Whitcomb was killed in the attack while the other man survived.
Carey pleaded guilty in June to second degree murder and other charges, and the American Press reports that Carey was sentenced to 30 years in jail.
His attorney said Carey suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and was high on synthetic marijuana at the time of the fatal attack.
