To debate or not to debate. That is the question regarding a June 24 Senate debate in Whitefish hosted by the Montana Broadcasters Association.
Denny Rehberg's Senate campaign this week told the Montana Broadcasters Association that Rehberg never received an invitation to the debate and could not participate in a morning event. Rehberg offered instead to debate in the afternoon.
The debate is currently scheduled with Senator Jon Tester next Sunday morning, June 24 at the MBA's annual meeting in Whitefish.
MBA officials tell us that they had multiple contacts with the Rehberg and Tester campaigns regarding the debate, beginning in October 2011.
MBA officials also tell us that on June 4, the Rehberg campaign called to complain about the fact that the Whitefish event was co-sponsored by AARP.
With or without Rehberg's attendance, the MBA says the debate will go on.
"Mr. (Dan) Cox and Mr. Tester will be on the program. We sincerely (h)ope that Mr. Rehberg will join them. We are prepared for either eventuality," Gregory MacDonald of the MBA said in an email about the June 24 debate.
Cox is the candidate for the Libertarian party.
Both Tester and Rehberg will be appearing in their first debate tomorrow at Bucks' T-4 during the Montana Newspaper Association annual gathering.
