In a new scam, people are pretending to be Montana Highway Patrol troopers to get money out of citizens, according to a press release.

MHP says victims have reported getting a call from someone pretending to be an officer and saying that a family member has been in a wreck or arrested. The perpetrators ask for money to get the charges dropped or have the person released.

MHP officers assure that they do not call citizens to ask for money, and if a person has actually been arrested, the person picking them up will pay that directly at court or jail.

Call police or your sheriff's office to report scammers.
