WHITEFISH - The mother of a murdered Whitefish soldier spoke out on Wednesday after her son's killer was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Billie Jean Eisinger took the stand Tuesday in a Lake Charles, Louisiana courtroom and spoke directly to Marcus Carey - her son's killer.
Carey changed his plea to guilty after a plea deal, and admitted killing Byron Whitcomb while he was sleeping.
Eisinger says prosecutors in Lake Charles were very helpful and comforting - and assured her that a plea deal was the best way to make sure Carey would spend time behind bars.
"Boy, I can't even put it into words, it was very difficult. After being on the witness stand and the judge with all these sentencing him to 30 years - I just broke down. It was very tough, but I didn't realize how strong I truly could be because actually I was speaking from my heart and I was speaking for Byron," she told us.
Eisinger says she and her husband Tom are heading back to Whitefish on Thursday, and says when she has time to process everything, she and Tom may pursue a program to prevent other soldiers from being harmed while on military bases.
