MISSOULA - First came an online petition against former Montana Congressman Pat Williams, and now there is one squarely in the corner of the beleaguered member of the Montana University System's Board of Regents.
Williams took plenty of criticism earlier this month for saying in a New York Times story that the University of Montana needed to quit recruiting "thugs" to the football program.
But now a petition started by Aylinn Inmon of Missoula urges the Montana State Senate to formally confirm Williams to the Board of Regents, saying in part that Williams has spent his life fighting to improve education and has always stood up for Montana students.
Over 1,700 people had signed the petition as of Tuesday evening.
