LIBBY - Officials say eight sticks of dynamite, dated 1948, were removed from an unused building on the Libby Western Montana Mental Health Center property.

An asbestos cleanup worker found the box of dynamite in an attic Monday, according to a Lincoln County Sheriff's Office press release.

Emergency officials cordoned off the area. On Tuesday, the Missoula City/County Bomb team arrived and brought the dynamite box down from the attic.

The bomb squad found that some of the deteriorated explosive had fallen out of the box and remained in the attic.

Tuesday afternoon, with Libby fire and ambulance officials standing by, the bomb squad detonated charges to explode and destroy the dynamite on the ground and in the attic.

The building will later be demolished, officials said.
