BUTTE - One dog has died and another is recovering from possible gunshot wounds while reportedly on their own property.

The shooting happened Saturday evening on the 1300 block of Kaw Avenue in Butte. The dog owner told law enforcement the dogs were seen in the back yard at 6:30 p.m. and they were fine. By 8 p.m. the dog owner found one pet dead and the other injured from what appears to be gunshot wounds.

Sheriff John Walsh says a senseless shooting of pets on their own property is disturbing.

"These are obviously things that are very disturbing to all of us. If someone is firing a weapon at animals in our community, that's really not acceptable and obviously you've got potential to injure humans too. If the person were to miss and it goes through the animal and hits a human. We don't know what's behind these things but obviously we want to stop it if at all possible," says Walsh.

The dog owner says the injured dog will live with the bullet or pellet in its stomach.

If you have any information about the shooting you are asked to contact the Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement Department at 497-1120.
