FORT BENTON - A woman is charged with attempted deliberate homicide after she reportedly admitted that she stabbed and "gutted" her mother.
Lindsay Tope was arrested in connection with the stabbing, which reportedly took place at a Fort Benton apartment on the night of Monday, June 24.
Neighbors said they heard loud voices coming from Tope's apartment, but weren't sure if Tope was arguing with another person, because they said she often "argued" with herself in several different voices.
Shortly after the loud voices stopped, Tope's mother came into a neighbor's apartment and said, "Call 911. I've been stabbed."
When sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, Tope reportedly told one of them, "I was having a psychotic break. I stabbed my mother, I gutted her."
Tope, 31, was placed into the back of a patrol car. A sheriff's deputy said she kept trying to get out of the car and wanted to check on her mother.
Tope's mother sustained stab wounds to the front of her neck and on her back. She was taken to Missouri River Medical Center by ambulance and then airlifted by Mercy Flight helicopter to Benefis Hospital in Great Falls where she underwent surgery. The surgeon said that she was lucky to be alive based on the nature and extent of the injuries.
Tope appeared in Cascade County District Court on a warrant on Wednesday. Her bail was set at $250,000.
